The National Institute of Science and Technology for Studies on the United States (INCT-INEU) is an unprecedented undertaking in Brazil, aimed at producing and disseminating qualified knowledge about the most diverse aspects of the reality of that country, its policies and their impact on the international system.
Created in 2009, as part of the National Institutes of Science and Technology Program — an initiative by CNPq, in partnership with CAPES and state agencies for scientific promotion — INCT-INEU receives strong support from FAPESP, which accounts for 50% of public funds invested in the INCTs based in the state of São Paulo.
Organized in a network, the INCT-INEU has a wide multidisciplinary team of researchers (about 80, of which 80% are Doctors), who work in 17 Brazilian Universities (in addition to UNICAMP, which is the current host institution, the institutions, in order alphabetically, they are: PUC-RJ, PUC-SP, UERJ, UEPB, UFGD, UFGO, UFPB, UFPE, UFRGS, UFSC, UFU, UNB, UNESP, UNIFESP, UNILA, USP), in addition to a research center of great tradition in Brazilian Social Sciences, the CEDEC.
Initially conceived to develop studies on US foreign relations, little by little the INCT-INEU had to incorporate topics related to domestic institutions and processes (economic, socio-cultural and political) into its agenda. Today, the network's searches cover four broad areas:
United States International Economic Policy
Grand Strategy and Security Policy of the United States
The Role of the United States in Global Governance Structures
Government Institutions, Processes, and Policies in the United States
Latin America and United States Relations
Brazil and United States Relations
Complying with the model provided for in the Program of National Institutes of Science and Technology, the INCT-INEU, in addition to research itself, the INCT-INEU is also committed to training qualified personnel and disseminating knowledge about the United States in Brazilian society.
The educational vocation is carried out by offering specific disciplines in the Undergraduate and Graduate Programs linked to its network, in addition to extension and specialization courses and disciplines offered by team members. It should be highlighted, in this regard, the quantitative and qualitative importance of the supervision of Master's Dissertations and Doctoral Theses developed by researchers-teachers at INCT-INEU. It is through him that the university ideal of the union between teaching and research comes true.
The dissemination of knowledge about the USA to a wider public is carried out through two channels, mainly: the International Studies Collection, maintained in partnership with the UNESP Publishing House, and the Political Observatory of the United States, OPEU, website, where academic studies and brief articles on burning issues of the conjuncture.
INCT-INEU members are also engaged, in a decentralized manner, in holding conferences, lectures, debates, short courses, in addition to participating in interviews and social media programs, contributing with data and analyzes for the understanding of the issues at hand. In all these dimensions, the INCT-INEU is inspired by the purpose of reducing the gap in knowledge about the United States that exists in Brazilian society, in order to train decision makers, in the public and private sectors, as well as social actors and opinion makers. , to better take advantage of the opportunities opened in the relationship with that country.
