Latino support for Donald Trump in swing states in the United States reveals a complex combination of loyalty and discomfort with the president's policies, especially about immigration and deportations. Conversations conducted in focus groups organized by NBC News and academic partners (Syracuse University and research firms Engagious and Sago) indicate that, despite some criticism, most of these voters remain aligned with Trump, mainly on economic issues element.
Participants in the focus groups, who had contributed to Trump's 2024 victory by boosting his performance among Latinos, reported general approval of the administration's handling of illegal immigration. Many justified the vote based on concerns about inflation and the economy, saying they see Trump as a businessman capable of recovering the country financially. However, disagreements began to emerge when the policy of mass deportations was discussed. While support for Trump's focus on illegal immigration predominated, criticism arose about the lack of distinction between criminal immigrants and workers who contribute to society. To some, the president would be failing to take a more selective approach, unduly penalizing longtime residents who have no criminal record.
The topic of deportations has exposed personal and communal tensions. Participants reported growing fear among immigrants, the spread of warnings about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations and a sense of insecurity, even among citizens. Despite these concerns, support for Trump's response to the protests in Los Angeles against immigration raids was overwhelming among respondents, with many justifying the deployment of the National Guard as necessary to prevent disorder. Still, some pointed to abuses of presidential power, questioning the intervention without the governor's request.
In the economic sphere, the predominant feeling among
voters was one of relief and positive expectations. Many said they had noticed
an improvement in the cost of living or a reduction in anxiety about the
economy. Trump's image as a manager and entrepreneur strengthens the confidence
of part of the electorate in his ability to face economic challenges, although
some voices have highlighted the persistence of high prices and the delay in
concrete measures to contain inflation. Trade and tariffs have also divided
opinion, but without compromising global support for the president.
